FAA Bill Amendment May Make Chaos, Threaten National Security

The Merkley/Kennedy Amendment would put a total end to TSA’s use of facial recognition technology ( FRT ). This prohibition would continue in effect until the Transportation Security Administration of the United States meets stringent and difficult requirements, which would in turn cause major disruption to travel operations. The United States Transportation Security Administration would have to teach its staff, relocate its technology, and rebuild testing lanes during this time. All of these do cost money and possibly harm aircraft security. The proposal would also halt the development of Facial Recognition Technology ( FRT ) matching technology in additional airports until May 2027 and forbid the use of Facial Recognition Technology ( FRT ) for non-trustworthy travelers. Also, expansion and enrollment in TSA PreCheck Touchless Identity Solution may become ceased beyond existing customers and the six airports already utilizing it ( ATlanta- ATL, Dallas Ft Worth- DTW, Los Angeles- LAX, New York- LGA, New York- JFK, and Chicago- ORD ).
