As a retaliatory measure for Kenya’s recent refusal to grant permission for Air Tanzania Company Limited ( ATCL), the national airline of Tanzania, to conduct cargo flights between Nairobi and other countries, the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority (TCAA ) announced that effective January 22, 2024, it has suspended all passenger flights operated by Kenya Airways ( KQ ).
According to the TCAA, the Kenyan authorities ‘ denial violates Section 4 of the Air Services Memorandum of Understanding ( MoU) that both countries signed in 2016. The requirement for equitable remedy for airlines operating in both countries is stated in this particular area.
According to the TCAA statement, which was released today and was signed by Director General Hamza Johari of the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority,” Tanzania civil aviation authority has decided to revoke the approvals for Kenya Airways ( KQ ) to operate passenger flights between Nairobi and Dar es Salaam under Third and Forth Freedom Traffic Rights with effect from 22 January 2023.”
According to Section 4 of the Memorandum of Understanding on Air Services between Tanzania and Kenya, which was signed on November 24, 2016, in Nairobi, this is in retaliation for the Republic of Kenya’s aerodynamic authority rejecting the Tanzanian demand for all-cargo journey activities by Air Tanzania Company Limited under Fifth Freedom Traffic Rights between Nairobi and Third Countries.
The rules of the Chicago Convention and the diplomatic weather service agreement between states must always be upheld by the Republic of Tanzania.
Given that Kenya Airways runs several regular flights to and from Tanzania and that many people rely on KQ for travel between these surrounding countries, the suspension may have a substantial effect on them.
There are now 33 regular scheduled flights operated by Kenya Airways between Nairobi and Dar es Salaam.
Three major airlines, Kenya Airways ( KQ), Precision ( partially owned by KQ ) and Air Tanzania, operate on the NBO-DAR route. SOURCE: Tanzania outlaws all airlines operated by Kenya Airways.
