Pegasus Airlines, Turkish budget carrier, successfully operated its inaugural flight today (December 21, 2023) connecting Birmingham Airport (BHX) and Istanbul’s Sabiha Gökçen International Airport (SAW).
Turkish carrier is now operating this route three times a week – on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.
The addition of new services to SAW is anticipated to garner significant popularity among individuals seeking sun, religious pilgrims, those traveling for business purposes, and people visiting family in both Turkey and various destinations covered by Pegasus Airlines‘ extensive network spanning Asia, Europe, and Africa.
Pegasus Airlines operates flights to over 130 destinations in Asia, Africa, and Europe, including Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah in the UAE, Doha in Qatar, Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada in Egypt, Beirut in Lebanon, Karachi in Pakistan, Tbilisi and Batumi in Georgia, Baku in Azerbaijan, Yerevan in Armenia, Baghdad, Erbil, and Basra in Iraq, Tehran and Tabriz in Iran, Medina and Riyadh in Saudi Arabia, Almaty, Astana, and Shymkent in Kazakhstan, Bishkek in Kyrgyzstan, Amman in Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait. They also offer connections to popular Turkish tourist destinations such as Antalya, Bodrum, Dalaman, and Izmir.
Pegasus is also committed to reducing carbon emissions in accordance with IATA’s Net Zero by 2050 initiative and global efforts to safeguard the environment. As part of its sustainability strategy, Pegasus focuses on acquiring fuel-efficient, next-generation airplanes, which positions the airline as one of the most technologically advanced in Europe, boasting an average fleet age of 4.6 years as of September 2023.
BHX shares the same aspirations and is actively working towards becoming a carbon-neutral airport by 2033. To achieve this goal, BHX is incorporating low-carbon alternatives into its operations. An ongoing project is underway to install 12,000 solar panels along the northeastern perimeter of BHX. By May 2024, the renewable energy generated by this solar installation will meet 20% of BHX’s electricity needs.
