Bad weather and snow have put air transport in crisis mode across Europe, with serious repercussions on railways and sea connections. In fact, since Sunday, December 10, over 600 flights have been cancelled on the old continent. Because of heavy snowfalls, the airports of London, Berlin, Dusseldorf and Amsterdam could not accommodate airplanes for hours.
Numerous disruptions on the Italian railway network and in connections to Northern Europe are foreseen to continue during the current week. Departures from Bergamo airport were delayed on average of about forty minutes until the morning, as well as two cancelled flights: one for Munich and one for Berlin.
Britain in the chaos, however, because of the snowfall between Saturday night and Sunday had all London airports, according to British media, reporting delays, with many companies forced to cancel flights. There are many cancellations and inconveniences at Heathrow Airport, the most congested in Europe. Stansted also reports several delays while the situation seems to be quieter in Gatwick. However, companies warn passengers to check if their flight is operating before going to the airport.
In Germany, more than 300 flights were cancelled in Frankfurt, while in France a ferry with over 300 people on board was stranded at the exit of the port of Calais blocking the maritime traffic. Even in Dusseldorf, the airport remained closed for 4 hours on Sunday afternoon.
In Italy, the railway network is suffering from heavy rains and snowfalls, especially in Liguria, where the Genoa-Acqui Terme and Genoa-Busalla-Arquata lines have been suspended, while on the Parma-La Spezia line there is an interruption between Pontremoli and Parma, with bus service replacement. Finally, very slow traffic is happening on the Bologna-Prato and the Milan-Genoa.
Maritime transport in the Gulf of Naples has stopped because of bad weather: from this morning all the scheduled connections from Naples and Sorrento to Capri, Ischia and Procida were stopped. The weather alert warning issued by the Civil Defense indicates storms and strong winds until Tuesday, December 12.
Finally, in Sicily, Siremar announced that “due to the persistence of adverse weather conditions the morning runs from Trapani to the Egadi and from Palermo to Ustica islands have been cancelled.”
