Billund Airport adds summer sparkle

Continuing to record its best-ever passenger traffic results, Billund Airport has so far delivered a robust 12% growth in the first months of 2018. This period of development is set to be maintained as the West Danish gateway launches an additional six new routes and welcomes three new airlines into its portfolio during S18.

Expanding its summer schedule, the airport’s network growth gets underway with two new links to Athens. Both Ryanair and Primera Air launch weekly services to the capital city in May, as Billund’s fifth connection with Greece joins established operations to Chania, Rhodes, Zakynthos and Kos. As the Irish ultra-low-cost carrier (ULCC) begins its 13th route to Billund, the Athens sector becomes Primera Air’s 19th route to the airport.

As the peak summer season approaches, Billund will welcome the arrival of Nordic carrier, Widerøe. The first new airline to join the airport in the coming months will commence a three times weekly service to Bergen in June, offering over 50 flights from the West Danish airport during S18. Adding Billund’s second link with Norway, the new flights join existing connections to Oslo Gardermoen seeing the airport offer more than 93,000 seats to its fifth largest country market this summer.

Wings of Lebanon will also commence flights to West Denmark in June, linking Billund to its Beirut base. Throughout the peak summer month the airline will service the route with weekly flights.

The beginning of July will bring another new carrier as LOT Polish Airlines joins Denmark’s second biggest airport. Expanding Billund’s hub connectors to 11 airlines, LOT adds operations from its Warsaw Chopin base with a 12 times weekly service. As a result of this expansion the airport’s 12th largest country market is expected to reach 50,000 seats this summer.

Later in July Wizz Air will launch its seventh route from Billund, starting the airport’s first direct connection to Iasi – Romania’s second-largest city. Offering nearly 440 flights from the West Danish airport this summer, the ULCC’s new sector joins Bucharest and Cluj-Napoca on Billund’s network to Romania.

“The 2018 summer season is set to sparkle with new routes and partners joining us over the coming months,” comments Jesper Klausholm, Head of Airline Relations and Marketing, CMO, Billund Airport. “We’re coming off the back of another record year and already on course to reach early forecast expectations with an ever-expanding selection of great destinations. With the support of our growing number of partners, we can continue to achieve great results together,” adds Klausholm.
