Hudson River takes on another air crash

The Hudson River in New York has witnessed another aviation crash – this time a helicopter. The chopper crashed at approximately 2:30 pm today, Wednesday, May 15, 2019, in a location near the Lincoln Tunnel and 30th Street.

According to witness reports, the helicopter had just taken off from a helipad on West 30th Street when it immediately attempted to make an emergency landing but crashed 50 feet short of the landing area.

A 35-year-old pilot was the only person onboard who was rescued from the water by a ferry. It appears he only suffered a cut to his hand. The pilot had deployed floats along the helicopter’s landing skids which kept the chopper from sinking.

The southbound lane of FDR Drive was closed so FAA authorities could conduct an investigation. There was no indication drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.
