India’s Commerce Minister takes charge of Civil Aviation Ministry

Suresh Prabhu has been given additional charge of India’s Civil Aviation Ministry, after the resignation of Ashok Gajapathi Raju from the government of Narendra Modi.

Prabhu is the Commerce Minister in the BJP-led government at the center.

Immediately after Raju’s resignation, India’s Prime Minister Modi took charge of the ministry but has now passed it to Prabhu.

Raju had resigned as per the decision of his TDP party to ask the two ministers to quit the government, but stay as part of the alliance government at the Center.

Suresh Pabhu had earlier served as the Railway Minister and also as Commerce Minister.

It is not clear how long will this additional charge continue. Civil Aviation is one of the key ministries where much work is being done, especially with the UDAN scheme, to connect many unserved and underserved airports.
